JNGD.S8.G56 Flight Plan: Ending The Road Trip With A Sabre Dance In Buffalo

The Winnipeg Jets close out their quick three game road trip with a second afternoon game, this time in Buffalo. They have now lost three in a row for the first time this season and if they want to avoid their first four game losing streak since the 2016-17 season, they’ll need to find the net a bit more against the Sabres than they did against Ottawa in the previous game.

Jets Player To Watch

#48 Brendan Lemieux  – Left Wing

It’s a little bit surprising (ok, maybe more than a little bit) that Brendan Lemieux has turned into one of the Jets most reliable goal scorers since the Christmas break.

Now, say what you want about the last couple of goals he’s scored – both came in what most of us call “garbage time” with the game well decided late in the third period – one can’t deny he does have a knack for driving hard to the net and around the opposing goal he’s got decent enough hands (a skill he displayed going back to his days in in the OHL) to fight off would be checkers and finish plays.

He’s also cut down on on bad penalties taken, although he still doesn’t hesitate to throw fists when he deems necessary even against bigger opponents.

Last Jets Game

Woof.

Jets Notebook

  • The last meeting between these two teams ended in a 2-1 shootout win for the Sabres back on November 16 in Winnipeg. The Jets all time against the Sabres have a healthy 34-21-7 record.
  • Look for the lineup to say pretty much the same from the last game on Saturday as the Jets have a quick turnaround in their eighth back-to-back- set of the season. Dmitry Kulikov is still likely out with an upper body injury.
  • The Jets are a fairly impressive 5-2-0 in the second game of their back-to-back sets this season. They aren’t as impressive in afternoon games however sporting a 3-3-0 record.
  • While they’ve lost three in a row, the Jets haven’t lost three regulation games in a row since March of 2017. They look to avoid that today.

Sabres Player To Watch

#53 Jeff Skinner  – Center

When the Carolina Hurricanes traded Skinner to Buffalo this past August, it left many hockey fans wondering just what exactly the Canes were doing giving up a player who had topped 25+ goals in four of the seven full seasons he’s played in Carolina. Even last season which many felt was an off year for him still saw him finish with 24 goals and 49 points. Sure enough, Skinner has been fantastic with the Sabres as his 33 goals has him four away from matching his career best – 37 goals scored just two seasons ago with the Canes.

It could go down as one of the all-time best “what were they thinking” deals in NHL history, especially if he keeps scoring goals like this against his old team.

Last Sabres Game

They were down going into the third period, but three third period goals – two of them on the power play – helped the Sabres pull off a much needed win to keep them in the Atlantic playoff race with a 3-1 win over Detroit.
