JNGD.76 Recap: Tanev Gets Hatty As Jets Win Sixth In A Row

Brandon Tanev – we swear that’s not a typo – picked up the hat trick (at least we think he did, that first goal was iffy) to help the Jets complete a perfect six for six home-stand with a 5-4 shootout win over the Boston Bruins.

TALKING POINTS

  • Did not see this being the time where Brandon Tanev had his breakout game, but sure, why the heck not?
  • Could you get any more of a typical Brandon Tanev type goal like the first one he scored tonight? Jams the hell out of it at the goal line and no one is really sure if he scores. One ref waves it off, another ref calls it a goal, they review it for a length of time and then pretty much everyone does the shrug emoji and call it a good goal.
  • That second goal was much nicer (not to mention unquestionably legit) and amazing that it came from pestering the hell out of Brad Marchand
  • On the third goal, you could practically hear Paul Maurice saying “…and THAT is why he’s on the penalty kill.”
  • Stupid penalties almost did the Jets in here again. None were more stupid than that Josh Morrissey hit. It was thought that maybe he saw red on the (clean) Brad Marchand hit of Mark Scheifele seconds earlier, maybe he was just trying to answer with a tough play as well, who knows, but you can’t do that kind of stuff in the playoffs.
  • Mark Scheifele’s penalty in the third that led to the Bruins fourth goal was also stupid. Maybe there was some selling there, but you can’t put your stick across the numbers of a player and then wonder why you got called. You’re just asking for it at that point.
  • A few weeks ago Paul Maurice saw a 3-1 Jets lead turn into a 3-2 lead and challenged that second goal for offside. He lost that challenge, put his team on the PK that they eventually gave a goal up on. At the time I was ok with that call because it was not that late in the game, the Jets penalty kill is good so maybe you have some faith in them…  Tonight however was a BAD call for a review. Already down a man killing the five minute major and he had a healthy amount of time for him and his coaches to look at it before he actually challenged… It was iffy at best which means it was 99% likely to be inconclusive and remain a goal and be an extra penalty… Just a bad, bad call for a review. Hopefully that gets that BS out of his system for good.
  • Kyle Connor continues to look all kinds of confident on the ice now, it’s remarkable. Maybe the biggest silver lining to that Mark Scheifele injury is somewhere along the way Kyle Connor realized he could carry the play and puck as well as Blake and Mark were when he was first put on that line.

PLAYERS OF THE GAME

For Winnipeg: Brandon Tanev – Of all the Winnipeg Jets you had on a list to score a hat trick in a game, Tanev was maybe 17th or 18th behind Joe Morrow and Connor Hellebuyck. Great night for him and a little vindication for Paul Maurice.

For Boston: David Pastrnak – A goal and eight shots recorded. On a night when Marchand and Bergeron both struggled, Pastrnak carried the load for the Bruins offense.

NEXT FLIGHT

The Jets pack their bags and head out for their last road trip of the season as the first stop is in Chicago to take on the Blackhawks. Puck drop is at 7:30 CST.

Hard time believing how many jersey wearing Bruin`s fans there were at the game tonight. You buy a jersey and cheer for a team that plays here just once a year . It just seems odd. Your thoughts ?

    • BuffsBetter

Jets were gone for 15 years…Whole generation raised cheering for another team. Bruins being an original six team, and Montreals biggest rival… As well as ( for those that feed off confrontation/negativity ) that cheer simply for the sake of cheering.. it happens. Closet Jets fans.
