JNGD.40 Flight Plan: Jets Look For Oiler Sweep To End 2017

The Jets head out to Alberta’s Capital to take on the Edmonton Oilers as they look to close out 2017 with a third win in a row both currently and against the Oilers themselves as they have a chance to sweep the three game season series in Edmonton.

Recently for the Jets…

The Jets exacted some revenge on the New York Islanders for a previous pre-Christmas beat down by handing them a post-Christmas 4-2 loss. The game was the first without forward Mark Scheifele and as had been talked about leading up to puck drop, it was the Jets forward depth that stepped up and helped fill in some of the missing talent as both Adam Lowry and Shawn Matthias chipped in goals while the new top line of Kyle Connor, Blake Wheeler and Patrik Laine didn’t miss a beat adding a couple of goals as well. Friday night wasn’t without it’s issues though as Brandon Tanev was hurt and left the game in the second period. He’s subsequently been placed on the IR and Jack Rosolovic has finally been called up – although he won’t be in tonight’s game as Marko Dano draws in while Andrew Copp gets bumped up to third line duty. To say the Jets forward depth is being greatly tested is an understatement right now.

Recently for the Oilers…

They couldn’t beat a 32 year old rookie goalie making his NHL debut. They had their chances against the Chicago Blackhawks and at least got a point out of the game thanks to a last-minute-goalie-pulled-goal from Leon Draisaitl who then proceeded to let Patrick Kane dance circles around him in overtime to give up the eventual GWG. After going into the Christmas break with a four game winning streak, the Oilers have now lost two in a row and are back to having a bit of a fragile psyche.

Recently between both teams…

This is the third and final meeting between these two teams and after having lost the previous four meetings the year before, the Jets have gone 2-0-0 against the Oil so far this season. Connor Hellebuyck is also 2-0-0 with a .915 save percentage against the Oilers since this interesting tweet was posted…

On Friday, Connor became the fourth NHL goalie to win his 20th game of the season.

Gameday Prediction

Now that we’ve spent this post poking fun at the Oilers and hyping up the Jets, time for reality… The Oilers are still a really good team that for a bushel full of reasons just haven’t gotten it together this season, but they have been showing signs as that dynamic young team that made the playoffs this year. They desperately need a win in the worst way and because it’s probably too much to expect a Jets sweep this season, we’re going to call a 4-1 Oilers win tonight.
