JNGD 22 Flight Plan: Going Duck Hunting

The Jets look to avoid a Thanksgiving Day hangover when they visit the Anaheim Ducks for the first of three regular-season meetings.

Jets Regular Season Game #22

Winnipeg Jets (13-5-3)
@
Anaheim Ducks (10-8-3)

November 24, 2017 – Puck drop: 3:00 PM CST
Honda Center – Anaheim, CA
TV: TSN 3
Radio: TSN 1290

Recently for the Jets…

The Jets won in regulation in Los Angeles for the first time in franchise history, beating the Kings 2-1 on Wednesday night.  Both of the Jets goals came in the final minute of a period.  Adam Lowry scored his third goal of the year in the final minute of the first period, and Patrik Laine scored his team-leading 11th of the year on a powerplay in the final minute of the second period.  Steve Mason was brilliant in the game, stopping 38 of 39 shots to pick up his second win of the season.  The Jets are 9-2-1 in their last 12 games.

Recently for the Ducks…

The Ducks had a three game winning streak snapped on Wednesday night, losing 4-2 to the Vegas Golden Knights.  Derek Grant and Josh Manson scored for the Ducks, while John Gibson stopped 45 of 49 shots in a losing cause.  The Ducks are 4-4-2 in the month of November, and sit four points back of the Vegas Golden Knights for first place in the Pacific Division.

Recently between the two teams…

This is the first of three meetings between the two clubs, and the first of two meetings at Honda Center. Last season the Jets posted a 1-2-0 record against the Ducks, losing their only meeting at Honda Center 3-1 on March 24, 2017. Michael Hutchinson started two of the three meetings last year, posting a 1-1-0 record, with a 2.46 GAA and a .919 SV%. Nikolaj Ehlers and Dustin Byfuglien were the leading scorers in the season series last year, each posting three points (one goal, two assists) in the three games.

Matchup to Watch

Jets Offense vs Ducks Defence

Although the Jets offence sits last in the NHL in shots on goal per game, they are eighth in the league in scoring, shooting at an 11.4% clip. They will have a chance in this game to improve their shooting numbers, as the Ducks are last in the NHL in shots allowed per game, giving up 36.7 per game. The Ducks are coming off of a game where they gave up 49 shots to the Vegas Golden Knights. The Ducks also have a Fenwick% (unblocked shot attempt ratio) that is 30th in the NHL at 45.84%. If the Jets can focus on getting pucks to net, it will benefit them in this matchup.

Gameday Prediction

The Ducks will be looking to respond after a disappointing effort on Wednesday night, while the Jets look to build upon a good road effort in Los Angeles. The early start may favour the Ducks, as the Jets seem to struggle in afternoon starts.  This may be an unpopular opinion but: Ducks win 4-3 in a shootout.
