JNGD 21 Instant Recap: Crown ‘Em!

For the first time in franchise history – not just Winnipeg Jets 2.0 history, but FRANCHISE Thrashers & Jets history – the Winnipeg Jets have won a game in Los Angeles in regulation time. It wasn’t easy, but Steve Mason willed the Jets to the franchise first in a 2-1 win over the Kings.

Quite a few Jets had a solid night in LA as the rebounded from a fairly ugly loss the other night in Nashville. Adam Lowry, Brandon Tanev, Matthieu Perreault and Andrew Copp all had fine efforts in the win. The Jets did get into penalty trouble in the third period, but Mason and the penalty kill held strong.

If you stayed up late for the action, who did you like in the game? How awkward is American Thanksgiving going to be in the Lowry home tomorrow between Adam and father – and Kings assistant coach – Dave?

The Jets now have 13 wins on the season and are in a playoff spot at the well known mythical “American Thanksgiving” point of the season where it’s almost a sure thing that teams in a playoff spot now remain there at the end of the season.

So, do you believe they are indeed a playoff team? Do you #BelieveInTheJets?

HOW DID THEY CORSI?

Charts & Numbers Courtesy of Corsica.Hockey

Matchups are limited to 5-on-5 situations. Tile size is scaled by Time On Ice and colour is scaled by adjusted Expected Goals differential. Blue represents a home team advantage and red represents a road team advantage.

PLAYERS OF THE GAME

For Winnipeg: Steve Mason – 38 saves, .974 save percentage, 1 assist – Amazing night in goal for the Jets keeping the Kings at bay and managed to pick up a secondary assist on the game-winning goal.

For Los Angels: Anze Kopitar – 1 assist, 5 shots on goal, 63% faceoffs – Anze has been a leader for the Kings all season and was dangerous all night.

Interesting game for advanced Stats. Kings out shot them 39 to 27, but then you look at those charts from Corsica and the Jets winning 5v5 corsi% 53 to 47 and in xGF% 62 to 38! You look at the raw shot totals and it’s like “well saved by the goalie again” but in xGF they killed them. This is what I like to see. Great goaltending AND great underlying statistics. Bit worried about that top line and Trouba though. If they can’t play though it quickly, PoMo should move MP up there and Conner down to help them out. Or maybe switch centers in the top 6? MP has to get more than 6 minutes at even strength that’s for sure.

What do you think about switching out Little with MP? That was a sweet goal he set up with Ehlers and Laine last night. I think that Matty centering Ehlers and Laine could be just the spark those young fellas need to and the second line starts popping it could light a fire under the first line who, of course, won’t want to be outdone.

Supposably Matty has issues with taking draws. Hurts his body. Otherwise ya for sure, but I don’t think it can happen. The top line is seeing a tonne of minutes, that might be hurting them a bit. A better 4th line C might let them eat up more 5v5 minutes (Hendricks got half his minutes on the pk last game). I’d definately move Perreault up, either switch with connor or take ehlers spot and move ehlers up. Either way Conner would end up on the 4th, which I don’t really like, but those top two lines look like they need a kick in the pants right now. If Connor were to go to the 4th though, that could be a good time to rebrand that line by bringing in Roslovic or Petan at C, but it’s just so hard to see that happening. I dunno I’m pretty stumped. For the amount of minutes the 4th line is getting right now it basically doesn’t matter who you have there, but I don’t really want to see young guys playing 6 minutes a game. The best would be if the 4th could get up to 10 minutes a game and the top line would stay well under 20
