JNGD 6 Instant Recap: Wrapped Up By The Jackets

Welp, that happened.

As mentioned in the pre-game write up, the Columbus Blue Jackets are pretty, pretty good now and tonight the Jets found out just how far they are from being on their level, losing 5-2.

The Jets were simply not able to handle the speed and aggressive play that Columbus came at them with pretty much from opening puck drop of the game. It kept the Jets pinned down in their zone for lengths at a time and forced multiple Jets turnovers (the final number in the game given by the statisticians is 14, though it felt like much more than that happened in the game) which the Jackets turned into at least two unassisted goals directly off the turnovers and two others that happened as a result of the Jets turning the puck over moments earlier.

Steve Mason got the start tonight – his first start since the two opening games of the season where he was shelled – and didn’t manage to do any better stopping 34 of 39 shots for a .872 save percentage.

At the very least, Kyle Connor had a nice season debut, scoring a goal in the second period.

As always, we welcome your thoughts on tonight’s game in the comments below!

  • Gonzo Hockey

    Enough is enough……
    – connor-scheifle-laine / ehlers-little-wheeler / perrault/lemieux, lowry – Buff / rosolvic – hendricks – tanev/copp/armia……..

send down/buy out tanev/mattias/petan/mason………..call up lipon if you have to…..

    morrissey – trouba, kulikov/niku – myers, enstrom – poolman…..

hellybuck / comrie……..call up lipon as extra

Buff cannot play D for this team any longer……the team needs a reboot, as he does as well……he is simply not good enough to help us…..change to a D by Committee

and the systems have to change……so

Maurice is done…..lost the team system wise……they don’t believe his system will work…….Get rid of him now….save the season….teams have fired coaches just before playoffs, we have to do it before playoffs are unattainable

get Daryl Sutter out of Alberta as the Head Coach, and Hawerchuk as an assistant, Jim Corsi as Goalie coach

  • Once again the Jets lack of a defensive system has made this team look worse than they are. The last 2 seasons this team spends large portions of the game running around their own zone, allowing high quality scoring chances while leaving their goalie with little support. Unless they receive great goal tending like Helly gave them in the last 3 games they will be hard pressed to make the playoffs yet again. Maurice has stubbornly refused to admit that maybe he has to change what he calls his defensive system to fit the players he has. If he believes what he does is defensively is good enough then maybe its time to change his players. On paper the defense look strong so does he have to change the pairings? When will it be the time Chevy makes a trade? Will he have to make a change in their coaching personal? Something has to be done, and soon, as it is painful for any Jets fan to watch this team looking like a top 5 team one game and a lottery picker the next.
