The Winnipeg Jets have made their first move for free agency in signing Shawn Matthias to a two-year contract at an average of 2.125 million per season.

Matthias is a goal scoring bottom-six player, who also adds some size to the Jets bottom lines at 6’4. He can play on the wing and at centre, which makes him very versatile. Hopefully the Jets can use him with some shot-differential drivers.

Sooo.. looks like he can score. Not a great playmaker, not a great defensive player. Not a positive possession player. From what I remember he skates really well. New 4th line LW?

This signing is due to a lack of confidence with Lowry playing centre.

He’ll either be bumped to wing (which won him WHL player of the year but hasn’t transcended into anything at the NHL level) or back to the Moose

Centre position has strengthened now though:

    Scheifele

    Little

    Matthias

    Copp

I think the intention is to play Perreault at 3rd line centre. Matthias is good competition for the 4th line.

    Ehlers Scheifele Wheeler
    Laine Little Stafford
    Connor Perreault Dano

With the following all fighting for the 4th line & press box. Whoever doesn’t make the cut goes to the Moose. Copp is waiver exempt, so he might go anyway.

    Matthias
    Armia
    Lowry
    Copp
    Burmistrov
    Howden
    Thorburn
    Peluso
