WWYDW: Draft Do Over

Welcome to this week’s version of What Would You Do Wednesday where you are asked a question and debate among yourselves what the answer is. Unfortunately, the only prize you will receive will be the most Twitter mentions.

For this week’s What Would You Do Wednesday, I am posing the question, If you could re-draft one of Kevin Cheveldayoff’s first round selections, who and why?

For where Cheveldayoff has picked, he and the scouting staff have done a pretty good at making good draft picks. However, there are still notable players taken later in the first round that have made an impact in their young NHL careers.

For example, Sean Couturier was taken at 8th, 1 spot after Mark Scheifele. Dougie Hamilton and Jonas Brodin were also available at 7th.

When the Jets drafted Jacob Trouba at 9th overall, there were still players like Filip Forsberg, Mikhail Grigorenko and Tomas Hertl up for grabs.

What Would You Do Jets Nation?

If you could do over a draft selection by the Jets, who would you select?

As always leave your answers and suggestions in the comments or on Twitter with the #wwydw hash tag and mention to @NHLJetsNation and/or me: @canadiankyian.

    OK
    Let’s start with Morrissey…

Chosen over Ryan Pulock, Nikita Zadorov who were both bigger and more aggressive Dmen not to mention Shea Theodore who was overlooked

Chosen over big centerman Curtis Lazar fresh from a Memorial Cup

Chosen over huge Anthony Mantha who led the OHL in scoring

And that American Roslovic chosen over the Canadian Merkley who just happened to shut down that #1 iconic draft selection in the Memorial Cup…ohh…what was his name…?…CONNOR MCDAVID !

Other than that…OK…for 1st rounders if you think Forsberg & Hertl are flops…

Morris is spot on that they could have done a bit better with some of their first round picks but given the crap shoot that the draft can be, even for first rounders, I think they have done well in the first round. My concern is that they don’t seem to be finding the hidden gems in the later rounds which is the trademark of a top notch scouting system. Where are the Colton Paraykos and the Shayne Gostisbeheres in the Jets late round picks?

The Jets European scouts do not seem to have brought much to the table in the last five years and that is an area where many treasures can be found with shrewd scouting. Just look at Detroit.

The Jets have drafted well enough that they may soon not have the advantage of top 15 draft picks so they better pull up their socks in taking full advantage of the later rounds. If they can’t do this then they will end up having to tank the team again in five years and start a new re build. Perennial contenders are built and maintained by their elite level scouting departments who can find those late round gems.

I am more than happy to be trashed for my opinions but I would much appreciate being informed as to where I have gone astray in my reasoning. I have great respect for the readers and contributors to this site and only seek enlightenment. If I am steering off course please explain. Pony up ya lazy bastards.

Morrissey the only one that was taken before players ho have already panned out as significantly better, and the use of the word significantly there is a bit liberal.

Wennberg and burakovsky both look like they’d have been better picks at this point but they are forwards.

I’m not convinced Theodore will be a better NHL dman then Morrissey by the time this season’s done.
