The Winnipeg Jets are nearing a point of desperate need for wins to stay ahead of the playoff dogfight, and unfortunately they didn’t give themselves many reasons to win this one.
The first goal of the game was a microcosm of the rest. Bad Jets penalty. Bad penalty killing. Bad goaltending. Goal against. Otherwise the Jets didn’t play too poorly.
Just the bad penalties + bad killing + bad goaltending killed them.
Let’s break it down.
Penalties, penalties, penalties – Sick of hearing this yet? I sure am. One way or another it has to stop. The Jets allow a league average PK goals against per minute of play, but their massive number of PIMs have caused them to be second only to Buffalo Sabres in total short handed goals against.
That HAS to change.
Goaltending disasters – Neither goalie has been good as of late, and are definitely not the sole reasons for the loses, but they are not helping. Jets are above average in terms of suppressing chances against per min while short handed, but they allow a league average amount of goals per min. The difference in that is goaltending.
It’s small samples, but neither goaltender has been above average in terms of 4v5 save percentage. Pavelec currently places 21st and Hutchinson 25th out of 40 in 4v5 save percentage. The skew in league results causes that to look more average than it is.
5v5, the brightside – Yet again the Jets out played their opponent in terms of out attempting them for 5v5 situations. They only allowed one goal against in all those minutes. If you ignored their inability to not take penalties, this is a pretty darn good team. If the Jets didn’t give the other team 10 minutes of power play time, it could have been a much closer game.
