Jets Win Big With First Pick Trouba

When the International Scouting Service handed out their May 30th, 2012 rankings, Rochester, Minnesota native Jacob Trouba was ranked fifth ahead of the likes of Matt Dumba, Rielly Morgan, and Griffin Reinhart.

However, Central Scouting ranked him ninth behind those same defensemen.

Whatever the ranking, the Jets have won big with selecting the big, hard hitting American defenseman.

Through 22 games with the United Stats Under-18 Development Team, Trouba was able to collect 18 points (four goals, 14 assists) in his second season with the team.

Trouba at 6’2, 193 lbs, is committed to play for the Michigan Wolverines next season, under legendary head coach and former NHLer Red Berenson while his OHL rights belong to the Kitchener Rangers.

Again, the Jets have seemed to selected a player who has both skill, size, and great character.

According to, Trouba is a man of his word.

"When the highly touted defensive prospect is ready to make his decision whether to play in the OHL for the Kitchener Rangers — who hold his CHL rights –  or the NCAA, there won’t be any late de-commitments or promises broken.

‘That’s sort of why I haven’t (committed), because I don’t want to make a commitment and then back down from it.’" (, 09/27/2011)

Showing how much of a physical edge the big defenseman plays with, TSN was showing a video of an eleven year-old Trouba levelling an opponent while playing in a game in Sweden.

On a team that needs to stock up on physical and defensively sound defensemen, Trouba is a big win for the Jets organization.

Already with an influx of offensive defensemen – Postma, Redmond, Bogosian, Enstrom, Byfuglien to name a few – Trouba will be able to add a defensively minded aspect to the Jets back end.

However, with his commitment to Michigan upcoming, there will be a growing period for the young defenseman as he will take the proper time to develop to be an impact player in a Jets uniform.

Again, the Jets win big with a good skilled player that has a positive attitude Jets brass looks for.

Nice job Matt and more importantly great job by the Jets in picking this guy. With some ” maturity” in the defensive corps, Jets will need this guy and the bios and coverage remind me of a young Phaneuf, let’s hope with MUCH better common sense and hockey sense!

The are saying UFA will be extended past 25. Jets better hope so. I see why they liked him; has more pts then rest of league. It is tough to know how good these guys are who don’t matchup against strength. I think the scouts are way overweighting new tourneys and playoffs, Memorial Cup, World Jrs, World under-18s. That Swedish D went 6th because of playoffs while other Swede D went higher after good World Jrs. How can you not like Grigorenko’s 91 pts?! If a head case, to me that says take Dumba and Reilly ahead of him. T.O. got M.Finn as a steal. SJ got Hertl; best of Europe in my books. got a 6th rounder (overager?) who lit up BCHL while hurt. To me his performance is almost as good as Trouba’s. No biggie but would rather trade the pick and get M.Finn at 35th and 1st rounder next year. Det stole Frk. Had wieght and maybe headcase issues early in season but look at that playoffs. I know player with McKinnon. But look at that playoffs. I wonder if we can trade a D to get Semin? I see a 2nd line RW hole, that Maxwell or Antropov might not fill.

Once again though, you had sure shots on the board in Forsberg and Grigorenko.
Forwards are a safer bet in round one, dmen in round 2. Play the odds.

I bet you’d like Couturier on your team right now too, hey jets fans?

Couturier is better, early on. Scheifele might pass him yet. Philly is tough on their FWs. I guess with Pavelec, it is a lot like the contract Giguire signed after 2003. Just gotta be ready to bench or minors him if doesn’t play well. I dumped Enstrom and a 2013 2nd rounder for Hertl, then signed Semin to fill a 2nd line RW hole.
Because there is Wellwood and Hudler to be had, trading Little would add assets if UFAs can be signed.
