Some news out of Camp Winnipeg Jets today, as the team signed free agent forward Matt Halischuk to a ? deal. As per Club Policy, terms were not disclosed. I think it's a rather stupid Policy, as everyone in the world with Internet access will be able to see the terms on Capgeek in a good day or less. BUT KEEP IT A SECRET UNTIL THEN! Bet on a 1-2 year deal at less than 1M per season.

The summer of fun continues. Today the news broke that restricted free agents Blake Wheeler, Bryan Little, Zach Bogosian, Paul Postma and Eric Tangradi have all filed for arbitration, and I’m not very happy about it.

Burmistrov leaves for nothing, Jets can't get rid of Cheveldayoff or Noel for anything

It's going to be a sour day in the Jets blogosphere. Alexander Burmistrov, the under-used, under-appreciated advanced stats wunderkind has signed a two year deal with Ak Bars Kazan of the KHL.

This was a known possibility, and Burmistrov was rumoured by Gary Lawless to want out of town, to want away from Claude Noel. Noel is a middling coach, and I suspect fans and bloggers alike would have happily sent Noel to Russia in Burmi's place. Not only that, but the team's refusal to trade Burmistrov means that the two main assets they had at the deadline - Hainsey being the other - were allowed to walk for nothing. Cheveldayoff had an excellent draft and addressed a known deficiency at forward this off-season, but continues to play a two-steps-forward, one-step-back game in building his roster.

Every week or two, I have a few thoughts. I've decided to call this the Extra Attacker. Sure, it's only July, but the Jets have made a few moves and perhaps tipped their hand about how the roster will look in 2013/14. Below we'll discuss the Pardy signing, the Montoya re-signing, have a look at the depth chart, and talk about what's left to do.

Jets Address Right Wing Depth, Make Questionable Add in Devin Setoguchi

Here at Jets Nation, I spend a lot of time trying to fix the second line. I mean, like, way more time than Kevin Cheveldayoff does (can we call him the Other Kevin yet?). Recently I suggested Michael Ryder for the job, and also Ales Hemsky as a discount trade option. Yesterday the Jets finally made a move to address the gaping hole in their lineup most recently filled by Antti Miettinen and Kyle Wellwood by bringing in one-time 30 goal scorer Devin Setoguchi for a 2014 2nd round pick.

The catch is that he truly is a one-time 30 goal scorer, averaging just 22 goals and 42 points per 82 games when his top season is excluded. Those totals have context, of course, and this past year Setoguchi was the 17th highest scoring right winger by points per 60 minutes of even strength ice time. The year prior, he was the 71st highest scoring right winger by the same metric. Who is the Gucher, really?
