Jets Game #45: Now it gets real - Winnipeg Jets VS New York Islanders

At long last, we've arrived at this point. Not since 1996 have the Winnipeg Jets been this close to getting in the Playoffs. After a 15 year NHL hiatus, an up-and-moslty down first year back, and this truncated season that's featured Divison leads, heart-breaking losing streaks, and Claude Noel 3 piece suits, today's game against the New York Islanders will be the most sinifigant game of the season. It's serious times. Win, and they're just a point back of this Islanders squad, and at the very least, keep pace with the rest of the pack, while even potentially bringing themselves into a tie with Washington. Lose, and they run the very real risk of getting too far behind as the season draws to a close next weekend. It's a serious game - shake off your hangover and get your yelling-at-the-TV-pants on. It's Jets Game Day.

Another day, another dollar, and another vitally important game. If the script hasn’t been clear enough over the last week, I’ll repeat it once more as the Jets face what is another ‘must win game’. This time the lowly Carolina Hurricanes try to blow through the MTS Center to put a true damper on the Jets playoff hopes.
Jets Player Usage: Defence (The Clitsome Problem)

Back in February, we had a look at how the Jets defence group was being used and their success in those roles. Today we re-visit how the defence has been used to discuss their individual and collective effectiveness with a particular eye toward who should be back next year.
As fair warning, the player usage charts for the Jets defence so far this year are frustrating to read. I’m a strong believer in fancy stats, and accept shot attempt advantage as an indicator of possession and territorial advantage. Still, the importance of applying some context to corsi numbers (discussed exceptionally here) has never been more obvious than when looking at the Jets defence. At first blush, the chart tells us that Big Buff is our best defenceman this year. Though I do cherish this moment, I respectfully disagree. Let’s see what you think.

The longest break in the schedule is over, leaving six games left to play and the Jets down two points on 8th, and 4 points on the division leading Capitals. The Lightning come into town with nothing to lose and a lot of changes since opening day. A new coach in Jon Cooper, a new goaltender in Ben Bishop, and a new top line LW in Alex Killorn. Yep, you read that right. More surprises after the jump.
