In a game that the Jets thoroughly dominated at even strength, they were ultimately defeated due to a bad bounce, defensive lapses, and a painfully horrible penalty kill.

An Oiler diehard living in Vancouver writing about the Jets. It’s a confusing time for one man’s fandom. “You can’t have split loyalties,” cries out the true fan. “That’s not how it works!” Yet it does and I do and it keeps me sliding up and down a continuum of fanaticism that colours me bluer than an Albert King song or brighter yellow than August sunshine, all depending on the time and place. I’m old enough to remember the glories of Gretz, I lived in Winnipeg while the Jets were howling mournfully in the desert and I narrowly avoided a riot in Vancouver. If our fandom is an extension of our true selves then hand me a sonic screwdriver and fire up the TARDIS because I keep regenerating: the same but different and a little wearier every time. Even St. Christopher would tell me to give it up already because there are no more Cups in sight, not by a long shot.

Serenity Now

From the opening puck drop, the game felt inevitable. Setoguchi was buzzing, the Jets controlled the puck, and chances on net seemed to come easily. Casual errors, turn overs by defencemen at the offensive blue line, and Reto Berra are the reasons the Jets managed just a single point against a poor team playing a poor game.

The team's skill-first draft class in 2013 continues to be the most impressive group of prospects in the system, with a number of 2011 and 2012 picks starting to fall behind.

The Calgary Flames come to town today, and it offers Jets fans a chance for some perspective. As frustrating as it is to be 11th in the West, taking two steps forward and two steps back every week, and having to play the Wild and Blackhawks seemingly constantly, the Flames have just a single point in 6 games and sit above only the Oilers for 13th in the Conference.

Calgary came into the season as pundit punching bags, but started the year with points in each of their first fiive games. The 8 points from those 5 games has been followed by 7 points in the last 15 games. Since top defender Mark Giordano was injured on against the Kings October 21st, the team has gone 2-9-1. Season, meet cliff.

The truth of their team still holds true, however. A gritty mashup of speedy third liners every team would drool to have and a few dynamic scorers managed by a competent coach means the Flames could play spoiler in Winnipeg's desperate need for two more points.
