The Broken Record: 'We Just Couldn't Score Goals.'

The Jets fought hard, but they just can't score goals.

Tuesday night, TSN Jets TV play-by-play man Dennis Beyak said something that few people would try in NHL12: "Thorburn with the one-timer!!!"

Sorry, being facetious. I don't want to rip at Chris Thorburn. He's not the only guy who can't score. Fact is, the Winnipeg Jets couldn't score in a women's prison with a handful of pardons.

Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden, the New York Rangers shut out the Jets 3-0 to drop Winnipeg to 7-14-4 on the road this season and 3-8-1 overall in January. The Jets went past the .500 mark on Dec. 3. Now, they're back to .500 at 22-22-6. They have scored only 20 goals in 12-plus (counting overtime) games this month.

When will the Jets production catch up to their performance?

After flirting with a playoff spot midway through December, Winnipeg, with last night's loss to the Carolina Hurricanes, have now dropped 3 of their last 11 since Claude Noel threw out his 2011 calendar. Obviously, 2011 was a terrific year for hockey in Winnipeg, what with the NHL returning, and a pretty good team playing some pretty good hockey for them.

But, despite controlling the flow of play in the first bit of 2012, the hockey Gods haven't looked upon your Winnipeg Jets favourably. Dustin Byfuglien hasn't played in 14 games, and Evander Kane has missed the last two. The presence of arguably the team's top forward and defenseman has obviously been missed in the last two games, but it's not like Winnipeg haven't played well without them in the lineup.

Wheeler: "I Could Have Made Those Saves.'

A Rare Occurrence This Month: A Jets Goal Celebration.

Winnipeg Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff was in the press box in Raleigh, N.C. Monday night. He told Dennis Beyak on TSN Jets TV that he was "evaluating his hockey team."

When the game between the Jets and the Carolina Hurricanes was over, Cheveldayoff probably evaluated the Jets 2-1 loss the same way everyone else did. Yes, Dustin Byfuglien has been out with an injury for awhile and yes, Evander Kane has suffered a concussion and is out indefinitely, but at some point, Cheveldayoff's Jets are going to need a legitimate scorer or two or maybe three.

With Edmonton's post-season hopes once again turning cold, Lowetide's attention is sensibly turning to the long-term again, with his gaze shifting towards the upcoming draft in June 2012. Futures and the ever depressing Battle of Alberta are the topics du jour.

Has a City Turned on its Young Star?

Evander Kane is a gifted hockey player. No question about it, he can play. He's 6-foot-2, 200 pounds and can skate and score. When he comes flying down the wing, he reminds some of the old-timers of Bobby Hull. He's considered by most NHL scouts as a 20-year-old with a tremendous future.

These days he's the Jets leading goal scorer with 18 and the second-leading scorer with 31 points. But he's now in a dreadful slump -- he hasn't scored a goal in 10 games, has only two points in the last 10 and is minus-eight.

He's also developing a horrible reputation and whether that's fair or not probably doesn't matter. Somehow, in a city that has embraced its hockey team with an enthusiasm never seen before in Winnipeg -- perhaps never seen in this country -- one player has upset the fans so completely that he's now the butt of jokes, the source of rumours and the target of large, homemade signs of derision.
