Jets Game Day: No Breathers

So, rumour has it spring has made its presence felt in the swamps of Southern Manitoba while I've been wallowing in a bunch of beer and loud music. Given all of the horror stories the new Jets likely heard before the year about the relentless misery of Winnipeg's winter, they might be entitled to think that maybe people were over-selling the hardships, since this season's iteration has been almost uniformly mild by normal standards.

Indeed, the time spent by the club at home has been bucolic in virtually every concievable way, on and of the ice, with even the few open practices that take place away from MTS Centre populated by happy throngs. The atmosphere really is that of a small city gone a bit dotty, and the team has seemed to feed off of that joy enroute to a stellar record at home.

You’ve all heard the cliché quotes over the years, “it was like a playoff game” but really it wasn’t. Because frankly – only a playoff game is a playoff game. I don’t know how to describe it any other way. Playoff games are different. I’ve been to fourteen different NHL arena’s and lucky enough to attend several playoff games. The latest installment in Winnipeg's 17 game playoff series (pace Noel) drops at MTS Centre this evening, and for the first time in a couple of weeks, scoreboard watching will take a back seat. After a leisurely run against a few Western Conference squads, the Jets play a team in the Eastern Conference race, and to be precise, it's the team most likely to stand as the primary impediment between the locals and the post-season.

Jets Game Day: Win or go home

After a fruitless road trip to the Canadian West, the Jets return to action tonight facing a rather unpleasant reality. The mirage of a playoff spot held mostly by playing more games than other teams has ended, and as a result, they find themselves 6 points in arrears with 13 to play. Not optimal, to say the least.

This evening's opponent presents a significant challenge in their own right, and unlike the last visitor to MTS, their recent hot streak has the whiff of something a bit sturdier.
