The competitive part of the NHL season has finally ended, leaving off-ice matters to dominate the news over the next couple of weeks. With in mind, it's a good time to have a look at a few items of interest concerning the Jets and the NHL. In this installment, Evander Kane and Ondrej Pavelec receive media treatment somewhat at odds with their actual performance, a look at a potential free agent target, and a slightly contrarian view of Rick Nash vs. Phil Kessel.

Winnipeg made its first move of the off-season this afternoon by retaining Jim Slater's services for the next three years at 1.6M per annum. The 29 year old from Lapeer, MI. scored a career high 13 goals this past season as the Jets' third line center on the so-called GST line with Tanner Glass and Chris Thorburn. The former MSU Spartan was also a primary penalty killer for the club, averaging over 2 minutes a night on the PK, a total higher than any other Winnipeg forward.

As the summer approaches and most sensible people around here turn their thoughts to the lake or the links or a patio on Corydon Avenue, Kevin Cheveldayoff has a more than a few meaningful jobs on his to-do list for the off-season.
One of the primary tasks at hand will be to decide precisely how to handle the RFA status of Ondrej Pavelec. The 24 year old is coming off of a season where the local media anointed him the team MVP, but a deeper look at his performance suggests that the team shouldn’t be too hasty in signing Pavelec to an expensive deal.
