After a summer where commercial matters like logos and sweater unveilings dominated NHL news in Winnipeg, the Jets' prospects take to the ice in Penticton this evening for their YoungStars opener in the first instance of actual hockey for the franchise. The youngsters head into this week coming off a couple of heavily attended practice sessions back here in the homeland, but tonight's tilt with the baby Sharks should be a proper chance to examine how much progress a few key players have made over the summer.

The Jets have spent most of the summer looking a little light up front, so it's possible that this evening's reported addition of Kyle Wellwood on a one year, 700K deal should be less of a surprise than it might seem. The well-travelled forward has never really been much more than a soft minutes type at the NHL level, but the club has had the look of a crew that was at least two forwards short of a top nine, and if nothing else Wellwood gives Winnipeg an inexpensive extra body with some experience.

True North has been pretty successful at keeping their powder dry, but the word that leaked nearly a month ago was made official this afternoon. TSN and Sports Radio 1290 will broadcast the club's games for the next ten seasons, and the crews for radio and TV were introduced as well.

The NHL is mostly in the doldrums in regard to player movement at the moment, but that doesn't mean that the business is completely peaceful, so it's time for a brief review of some of the happenings around the game. Of all the players that moved north with the erstwhile Thrashers this summer, the one gent whose presence seems to elict the most interesting range of reactions is Dustin Byfuglien. The Warroad native had a breakout offensive season after being dealt to Atlanta, but suspicions remained regarding how much of that success was gifted by percentages and circumstance.
