Earlier, I introduced on The Nations Network a new way of looking at a player's plus/minus rating, specifically to do with on-ice shot differential, in an effort to learn more about teams and players.
This month, somewhat regularly, I will break down types of players and teams in an effort to localize player talents and figure out exactly what certain teams need. There's definitely more to a hockey player than simply being "good" or "bad" and by how much, so today I will profile the defensive forward.

Earlier this week, I took to the Nations Network to further analyze a player's plus/minus rating, specifically to do with on-ice shot differential, in an effort to learn more about teams and players, sharing a theory I have with "high event" hockey players.

Let's start this with Phil Kessel. Or Eric Staal. Or somebody with a less impressive name, such as Jim Slater or Cory Stillman or Gregory Campbell. These players have a lot more in common than you might think. But we'll use Kessel as an example because he's the star player in the world's largest hockey market and a frequent earner of criticism and praise from all ranges.

There may not be a player in hockey whose positive on-ice performance is painted in such a negative due to his contract than Scott Gomez. Gomez is going to be 32 in December and makes a staggeringly Sather-esque $7.4M a season to be a serviceable two-way forward for the Montreal Canadiens. He scored just seven goals with 38 points this past season and was a minus-15. Yikes.

Earlier in the summer, I took a look at ways that the Winnipeg Jets could improve their win-loss record with changes in systems from the front-office to the coaching staff and not necessarily on-ice personnel, in the model of the 2011 Tampa Bay Lightning.
