Six thoughts 11/19/11: Jets 6-4 Flyers

In a matinee on Hockey Night in Canada, the Winnipeg Jets jumped out (as usual) to an early lead at home, and withstood a couple of late technical glitches, including one by CBC, hanging on for a 6-4 win over the Flyers. They now have a 2-0 record over Philadelphia, with a goals for/against record of 15-12. They've run their win streak to three, out-scoring their opponents 15-7 in that span.

SIX THOUGHTS:
-Remember the last time these two teams met? (Yes) But other than us remembering that the Jets had a 9-8 win on a late goal, how many of us remember that Winnipeg had a 5-1 lead early on? The same sort of thing happened here, and, right at the end of the second period, the score could have been 5-3 on a Harry Zoliniercyzk (I just wanted to write that name at least once) shot that beat Ondrej Pavelec but crossed the line a split-second late. Matt Read scored a pair in the third despite the Jets killing a couple of penalties, but, man, that game seemed a bit closer than it had to be.

Coming off a big Monday win against one division rival at home, the Winnipeg Jets met the Washington Capitals for the first time this season and had a big win against this division rival as well. Geographically, the two probably do not qualify as being in the "Southeast" but in the standings, they all count, and a big 4-1, Thursday night victory where a number of Winnipeg players stepped up. Here are six thoughts.

SIX THOUGHTS:
-The star of the night on this one was really Ondrej Pavelec, whose shorthanded play is really bailing out the Winnipeg Jets. After stopping 10 with the man down on Monday night, Pavelec had a repeat performance of that number Thursday night, 10 shorthanded saves, no goals, and three saves when the Jets were two men down in the second period. He plays a real unorthodox style, but it's been working, and while he won't make every save on the PK from here on out, he's pretty fun to watch right now. He stopped 31 of 32 overall.

Claude Noel shifted his lines around at the start of last game, presumably after Winnipeg was running on a 5-game losing streak. The results came with some success, as the Jets turned in arguably their best performance of the season Monday night against Tampa Bay, defeating them 5-2 and outshooting them 36-21 at even strength.
"I deal with efficiency. How do we maximize efficiency?" Claude Noel said after that game. "My job is not that difficult."

After a tough 2-1 loss in Columbus, Winnipeg returned home to face a team that they hadn't beaten in 12 tries. They got the early lead, held on, pretty much controlled the game start to finish with probably their most impressive win yet over last season's Eastern Conference runners-up.

SIX THOUGHTS:
Ondrej Pavelec wants to make all the saves

"PAVELECTRIC!"
Over the last five games or so, Ondrej Pavelec has been the best Jet, stealing a couple of wins in Florida and on Long Island and has really impressed casual on-lookers with his style of save-making.
If you haven't listened to our own Scott Taylor discuss Pavelec on Nation Radio this week, please, take the time to do so, because he has some good remarks about Pavelec's style. Not quite classic butterfly, to paraphrase, and more of a hybrid style like Martin Brodeur.
