The Winnipeg Jets, And Their Impact In Fantasy Hockey Circles

Just because you're into fantasy hockey doesn't mean you're this guy.

In case you haven't heard, the NHL is back

I'm aware that some people have been put off by the ordeal that dragged on through to January 6th, claiming that they're not coming back to the game. And while I disagree with those sentiments, everyone is entitled to their beliefs. I'll personally be enjoying the NHL product as much as I have in the years leading up to this lockout; if not even more, now that I have been reminded of terrible life without it can be.

One of the ways in which I consume the product, making the most of the experience, is by playing in fantasy hockey leagues. It's competitive, it's fun, it allows you to feel like a General Manager (without the stress that accompanies that position), and it makes you care about things you may not have necessarily cared about otherwise.

Friend of the blog, Jeff Angus, and I have combined to give a fantasy hockey preview of sorts, with a focus on the more prevalent questions surrounding the Winnipeg Jets heading into this shortened 2013 season. Believe it or not, the Jets enter the season as one of the more fascinating teams from a fantasy perspective, with a roster that boasts a handful of multi-dimensional talents.

The Jets' Amnesty Buyout Options

For the most part, the lockout has been a complete bore. Forget for a second that we're being deprived of professional hockey because of it. The coverage itself has been riddled with boring legal and economic mumbo jumbo that most hockey fans didn't sign up for. At this point, I'm sure most people would simply like to know whether a season will be played or not; without having to sift through the rest of the garbage (pardon my French).

But on Wednesday, word came out that a new collective bargaining agreement would provide teams with the luxury of two amnesty buyouts - essentially with the purpose being to provide cap relief - in an attempt to get under the $60 million cap that is set to be imposed for 2013-14.

This revelation has provided food for thought, and given legitimate hockey-related content to consider. Which brings up the question: how would it impact the Winnipeg Jets?

Panic Trading Evander Kane Would Be Hilariously Asinine

Evander Kane is holding a lot of money. But he's also quite money, himself.

On Wednesday morning, Evander Kane took a picture of himself holding what Chemmy from Pension Plan Puppets deduced to be $225,800. For some reason, this incident caused quite the outrage in both Winnipeg, and the Twittersphere.

On Thursday morning, Gary Lawless of the Winnipeg Free Press wrote an article in which he adamantly declared that Evander Kane would be not playing out the full length of his recently signed 6-year contract in Winnipeg. Rather than responding to this instantly, I took some time to stop hysterically laughing, and compose myself, before I started banging away at my keyboard.

If the Winnipeg Jets were to panic trade Evander Kane due to his perceived immaturity and shenanigans, I'm not sure if all the time in the world would be enough to get me to stop laughing, though.

Evander Kane Needs Your Help In Regaining His Smile

Evander Kane has plenty of reason to be happy. But he could be even happier.

On the surface, it seems like Evander Kane has it all. He has a $31.5 million contract with the Winnipeg Jets (whenever the NHL resumes play), talent that allowed him to score 30 goals in the best league in the world at the age of 20, all the fast food grub you could possibly want, and a follower count on Twitter that exceeds 106,000 (even though he isn't exactly all that frequent a tweeter).

But two things that he doesn't have are a satisfactory background and header image for his @Kane9JETS Twitter account. And that's why he has laid down the gauntlet to not only Jets and Evander Kane fans, but anyone with some semblance of creativity and/or expertise when it comes to designing images.

The Top Defensive Pairings In The NHL

Goals are fun. You know what they say: chicks dig the long-ball bulging of the twine. I'm sure that scoring a goal at the NHL level is one of the funnest things you could possibly do (legally).

What's not quite as glorious - but just as valuable in contributing to the effort of winning hockey games - is the act of preventing the puck from entering your own net. After all, a 1-0 win counts just as much as the 6-5 win. Remember, the ultimate objective of hockey is to score one more goal than you allow on any given night.

You don't truly recognize the beauty, and importance, of a great two-way defenseman until you get to watch one on a regular basis. Then, everything changes and you're left wondering how you slummed through all those days without one. What's even better than that is when you can combine two defenseman of that ilk, to form a top defensive pairing. There's comfort in knowing that you're in good hands.

Which teams (and individuals) benefited from this sort of chemistry? And how do they stack up against each other?
