The Jets Development Camp started yesterday. All ten of the Jets draft picks this year are in attendance among the 43 prospects on display. For the first time since Comeau took over as Head Scout, skill is the buzz word surrounding a crop of picks, and with good reason.
There were reams of pixels spilled about the Jets and Thrashers poor draft record under Marcel Comeau. Our friends at Arctic Ice tried to lower expectations via infographic. I, myself, looked at Comeau's record between 2003 and 2010 to find a pitiful success rate after 12th overall - just Pavelec and Enstrom can be counted as successes from 54 selections made in the latter 200 picks. The conclusion was obvious. For a rebuilding team, Marcel Comeau’s record demanded he be let go.
The Jets draft this year, then, has to be considered as much surprising as it was successful. Sure, the idea is to get good players. I just didn't know if Comeau knew that. And with Chevledayoff’s record of building a team through the waiver wire, I wasn’t sure he did either.

Our own Travis Hrubeniuk was candid in his review of the RFA situation developing in Winnipeg this week. GM Kevin Cheveldayoff has a growing mess on his hands, after bowing out of the Free Agent Frenzy (apologies to future bench warmer Adam Pardy), losing Burmistrov to the KHL, and now having three critical, cornerstone RFA signings turn into a power struggle with a deadline. Oh, and Tangradi and Postma also filed for arbitration.
The pressing questions, then, are: 1) how far apart are the team and the players in negotiations?; and 2) what are the big three worth in terms of money?

Some news out of Camp Winnipeg Jets today, as the team signed free agent forward Matt Halischuk to a ? deal. As per Club Policy, terms were not disclosed. I think it's a rather stupid Policy, as everyone in the world with Internet access will be able to see the terms on Capgeek in a good day or less. BUT KEEP IT A SECRET UNTIL THEN! Bet on a 1-2 year deal at less than 1M per season.

The summer of fun continues. Today the news broke that restricted free agents Blake Wheeler, Bryan Little, Zach Bogosian, Paul Postma and Eric Tangradi have all filed for arbitration, and I’m not very happy about it.

It's going to be a sour day in the Jets blogosphere. Alexander Burmistrov, the under-used, under-appreciated advanced stats wunderkind has signed a two year deal with Ak Bars Kazan of the KHL.
This was a known possibility, and Burmistrov was rumoured by Gary Lawless to want out of town, to want away from Claude Noel. Noel is a middling coach, and I suspect fans and bloggers alike would have happily sent Noel to Russia in Burmi's place. Not only that, but the team's refusal to trade Burmistrov means that the two main assets they had at the deadline - Hainsey being the other - were allowed to walk for nothing. Cheveldayoff had an excellent draft and addressed a known deficiency at forward this off-season, but continues to play a two-steps-forward, one-step-back game in building his roster.
