Why did the Winnipeg Jets lose 4-1 to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday night? Because the Pittsburgh Penguins were a superior hockey team.

Last week as I was hanging up my shoulder pads my partner, Kurt Davis, asked me how long I had been wearing them and why I even bothered. He commented on there hardly being any protection on the chest or back and how the shoulder caps are very small.

To the casual hockey fan, Mark Scheifele was a surprise pick last June in Minnesota. Many Jets fans were probably hoping Ryan Strome would fall to 7th and when he didn’t they were most likely thinking Sean Couturier was the probable selection (I know I did). Many experts felt that Winnipeg went “of the board” or “reached” when they selected Scheifele from the Barrie Colts.

The author shyly admits his departure from Winnipeg in 1996 was fueled by the feeling that Winnipeg was becoming like another small town in Michigan where General Motors had closed a big manufacturing plant (see movie from that zany Michael Moore)...as in tumbleweeds! I say Tumbleweeds be gone now!
