Game 51 @ Anaheim: Scoring Chances and Observations

I really hope the Jets got out of Anaheim as quickly as possible, because they straight up stole this game. It’s not something the Jets have been able to do often, but on Tuesday night they pulled out a game based highly on puck luck and solid goaltending, leaving Anaheim as the only team this year to beat the Ducks at home in regulation time.

Observations

The Ducks dominated possession times, and had quite the edge in overall chances. I will give the Jets a little credit on their shot blocking, for probably the first and only time. Although the only reason their shot block totals were so high was because of how badly they were out-played, they did block a fair number of A-1 opportunities to maintain their lead. That, combined with a lot of missed nets in the first period, really helped the Jets snag this game.

It’s pretty easy to see who the Jet forwards took advantage of throughout the game. Cam Fowler and Ben Lovejoy were often on the receiving end of the rare sustained pressure from the Jets. Outside of that, most players managed to keep things even, of not completely in their favour.

Despite being out-chanced, I thought the Ladd-Little-Frolik grouping finally looked like a solid unit together. They were actually the only Jets line to win their respective possession battle, but are without a real scoring threat at the moment. That’s more than okay, as long as the other units are putting the puck in the net.

I also thought Kane-Scheifele-Wheeler had a decent game despite everything, but I never would have suspected Scheifele to finish on the positive side of the ledger. Good for him.

Pardy and Ellerby were exposed a little bit on this night. They got caught on a bad line change, were hemmed in their own end quite a bit, and just didn’t look like the solid, well protected, line they have of late. Hopefully they can get back to it against the Sharks.

Byfuglien was less than impressive up front against Anaheim. I just don’t think his body is suited for games that rely so heavily on the rush. Not to mention the fact that the Jets defensive group really looked out-classed all night. They need their top guy back. Quick.

The only reason Mark Stuart wasn’t a bigger minus was because of his two stupid penalties. Stuart was guilty of no less than four brutal turnovers that maintained Anaheim pressure, and was completely useless in the high tempo game. Sure the guy gets shot blocks, but it’s because he spends so much damn time in his own end. I really hope Maurice sees what is so obvious to so many others that don’t work for TSN Jets.

In the end, the Jets won. Did they deserve it? I would argue not, but that’s how the hockey Gods work sometimes. I just hope they high-tailed it out of there as quickly as possible, and are ready for a better overall effort against the Sharks on Thursday.

Final Comment

I’m going to be out of town as of early Friday morning, so I won’t get time to record data for the games against the Sharks, Leafs and Blackhawks until at least Monday. If I get the chance I will get them posted, but don’t expect any of them to be on time. Sorry folks!

I write things, you read them. Then tend to yell at me for them. It's okay though, I'm from Winnipeg. I can take it. If you actually do like what I write, give me a twitter follow here (@thrubeniuk): https://twitter.com/thrubeniuk
